CA Foundation preparation plan

CA Foundation is the entry-level Chartered Accountancy course under ICAI’s new scheme of education and training. The current Foundation course consists of four papers: Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude, and Business Economics. Papers 1 and 2 are subjective; Papers 3 and 4 are objective. The official FAQ of ICAI also states that the foundation exams are held in January, May, and September.

For September 2026: ICAI has published the applicable Foundation study material and has also issued Foundation mock-test and revision-related announcements. Students should always check the latest ICAI notice and material applicable to their attempt.

CA Foundation syllabus: four papers

The course should be planned paper by paper, while keeping the aggregate passing requirement and the different question formats in view.

Accounting

100 marks. Focus on accounting concepts, processes, final accounts and problem-solving practice.

Paper 2

Business Laws

100 marks. Build command over the prescribed laws, legal concepts and answer-writing approach.

Can I register for CA Foundation after Class 10?

Yes. ICAI’s published FAQ states that candidates may register in the Foundation Course after passing Class 10 from a recognised examining body. Before appearing in the Foundation Examination, the candidate must also have appeared in the Class 12 examination.

How many papers are there in CA Foundation?

There are four papers: Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude, and Business Economics. Each paper carries 100 marks.

What is the CA Foundation passing requirement?

ICAI’s published FAQ states that a student must secure at least 40% in each paper and at least 50% in aggregate at one sitting.
